  • If you don’t surf you'd probably have no idea that San Francisco has waves. And if you do surf, chances are that while you might know Ocean Beach can occasionally pack a punch, you’re probably still unaware that once you get back on the sand you’ll find one of the most radical, staunch and diverse surfing communities in North America waiting to welcome you with open arms.
From the generational owners of working class watering holes and cutting edge surf shops to female chargers pushing it as hard as anyone in big waves and tech wizards who’ve only recently moved to the city yet love surfing Kelly’s Cove more than the internet, San Francisco the surf town has something for everyone.
In the first episode of the latest series of No Contest, host Ashton Goggans is rediscovering the mythical City By The Bay and he’s brought some of Red Bull’s favourite athletes along for the ride. He’ll surf in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge with @JamieOBrienJOB and @IanWalsh before Izzi Gomez ventures a little further south to take on the most famous big wave on the American mainland, Mavericks.
To top it all off, Ashton dives into the local food and bar scene with a cast of colourful culinary characters that can’t be beat. Hit play now and get to know the home of some of California’s greatest beach breaks like never before. Enjoy!
Interview with Izzi Gomez 👉 win.gs/49WpBCf

San Francisco hasn't had the best publicity recently. This peek into the surfing culture and the culture of the "avenues" of SF is wonderful! Ocean Beach is the harshest, least glamorous place you can find, and to have this thriving underground group of surfers who live and work and surf here is great to watch. Thank you, from a long time (former) resident of SF!

Surfed OB in the 90s. I've surfed all over the world and OB is the only place that really almost killed me. Alone on a big January day, undergunned, not another person anywhere to be seen. Multiple wave hold down. All black and cold. Saw my entire life before my eyes. Ended up on the beach puking water. Got a couple of good days out there as well. I don't miss it one bit :)

At Ocean Beach most surfers ask, "Is it small enough for me to surf today?" Only the few go out when the swell is pounding so hard it sounds like cannon fire but the rest watch safely on shore. That is when you can score relatively uncrowded waves but the price is steep.

I've been surfing and bodyboarding for about 30 years and OB is the only place I ever gave up on paddling out because I got so worked before even making it out to the lineup. I was in college and in really good shape. And when you get out, the current is insane. Don't get fooled by the footage, you have to be a beast to be able to surf that place when it's big.

Yeah there was one huge day (probably a clean triple overhead) every time I just about made it to the line up, a set rolled in and pushed me back 100 yards. This went on for about 40 minutes and I was just completely out of energy so after another 100 yard drag in I just gave up and rode a the whitewater in. Damn that was a bitter moment.

Well done video. Made me nostalgic. I grew up surfing Ocean Beach in the 80's and lived in the City for +10 years after college. I still remember certain days and waves vividly. Of glorious waves, absolute throggings, rejections and the ever present cold. I remember pre-surfline days when you'd listen to the buoy reports and call Wise surf shop for the report. The excitement of when fall started to kick in and the constant winds finally started to take a reprieve. Or paddling out at firing 10-12ft Noreiga with almost no one out. Or when the inside bars would go mental in a beat downs and barrel fest. The occasional magic that Sloat could deliver, or souths at Kelly's. I miss surfing power regularly and being in shape because of it. I don't miss the wind though!

Moved out to SF from southern east coast in the early 90's. Got my ass handed to me often on OB, but eventually made me a "durable" surfer for sure! lived in several spots in the Avenues, over the years. "spooky" to think how I used to solo charge on cold, foggy, drift days and survived. The Conditions can make for a very unique surf spot that only other surfers who spent time there will understand. Nice to see some old faces on the videos and glad some of the surfers got into restaurants and so on in the neighborhood. Shame that the politicians let the people down. Crime was never really an issue in the Avenues back in those days.

I met “ The Village” , a group of dedicated surfers with the Mayor, Doc , Bob etc. What a kind group of generous, fearless , borderline psychotic guys. We avoided FT Point because it was so agro unless OB was closed out. OB was mellow because if you made it out , people respect you just for making it out. It’s very yuppie , tech bro now, but they have been charmed by the kindness and the generous community. It’s nice to see it go from one to no women to always some out.

You hear the forecast, go to the Beach, wait, wait, wait, then it's perfect for 1-4 hours, then the tide changes, the sandbar changes and the perfect conditions fizzles out. The Water Temperature is typically 50-55 degrees F, not 65. A Hooded 4-5mm wetsuit with Booties and maybe Gloves will keep you warm enough to Surf.

Here's a memory from the 70's when Pee Wee and Bones ruled and Truelove would beat you up. O'Neill gave us the Seal Suit so we were warm. Only "aliens" (non locals) from down south Santa Cruz wore hoods. We called them squid lids. Bob Wise supplied us with custom leashes from his shop on Vicente. He had a spool of the heaviest bungee cord around that he sold by the foot. Those leashes DID NOT BREAK but they did stretch out. Anyone who went out with a custom Wise leash surely has memories like mine. Triple overhead set bearing down on you while your board tombstones 30 feet away. Trying to rub out the charlie horse in your leg (which got stretched 10 feet by that leash) while simultaneously sucking as much air as possible into your lungs before trying to dive under the next wave. Yes! Good times!??? This is what we paddled 45 minutes straight for? Mental illness at its finest. No fentanyl back then, just people dropping dead on the beach at Kelly's with their heads in bags from sniffing glue. And how about the "drought years", 75-76 with warm offshores for weeks? Anyone remember that?

Remembering one Halloween years ago with my roommate out at OB and it was perfect with light offshores and A-frame peaks. There were surfers everywhere, so many you could have walked from the Cliff House to Fort Funston on the hoods of surf mobiles without touching the ground. They came outta the woodwork.

Loved watching this (THANK YOU!) and reminiscing about growing up in the Sunset and surfing Ocean Beach in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Fort Point was magical, too but getting in and out of the water was gnarlier than the actual waves. The beach and surfing has become more popular than ever and I love that for people who are respectful. Oh haha BTW thanks for letting Deadman's still stay a secret!

I lived in the Outer Sunset for a year right out of college. Although much more quiet than inner city, I loved the laid back nature of it. I loved catching the sunset at ocean beach, I loved having a little backyard, Golden Gate Park, and I liked the surfing culture (although not a surfer) that was around me. Only downsides are the overcast weather and the public transportation convenience. 33rd & Irving rep!

Ocean Beach can get very big and perfect. In 1988, I paddled out on a big day, got caught in the lineup trying to get out and almost drowned. Closest I ever came to death. Its a big and powerful wave, the current is tough, and theres White Sharks everywhere.
